English for Multilingual Students
The English for Multilingual Students program welcomes local bilingual/bicultural students seeking to improve their language skills, as well as English language learners from around the world. The program is designed to equip English learners with language skills required for academic work at the college or university level.
The mission of the English for Multilingual Students (EMLS) Department is to help our students develop critical thinking skills as well as become fluent speakers, listeners, readers, and writers of the English language in order to succeed in and contribute to the academic, professional, and social settings of their choosing.

Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOP&S)
EOPS is a state-funded program that serves students from low-income, educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Services include academic, career, and personal counseling, peer mentoring, financial aid advising, scholarship information, transfer assistance, grant checks and other support services.
The CARE component offers additional grants and/or services to full-time students who are single parents, AFDC recipients, and have at least one child under the age of fourteen. Participants must qualify for financial aid.

Learning Communities
Learning Communities provide linked classroom experiences to help students establish a strong academic foundation. In a Learning Community, a group of students takes courses together, becoming a support network for each other and with the participating teachers. Students use discipline area texts in the reading class to develop reading skills using meaningful materials. One such community is Umoja ASTEP. (Also see BC Class Schedule)

Library Workshops
The Grace Van Dyke Bird Library hosts a series of research workshops each semester to help students learn how to conduct research properly and succeed in their courses.
Workshops are free, and are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Math Learning Center
Taking OR Planning to take a transfer-level math class & just need a refresher? Are you looking for math-learning assistance and support?
Do you have a schedule that requires you to not come to campus every week? Maybe you just need help with some background math skills, to support your current math class.
Consider enrolling in a Self-Paced, Non-credit, HYBRID course in the Math Learning Center!
If you are interested in "walk-in" tutoring, you can come to GS 8 for in-person tutoring. It is located in General Science Room 8.
If you cannot physically come in, then enroll in the Math B99NC - 73839 course OR email the MLC staff at mathlearningcenter@bakersfieldcollege.edu to receive the link to the Zoom meeting.

MESA
MESA Community College Program (MCCP) is one of the country’s oldest programs that provides academic support to educationally disadvantaged students so they can excel in math and sciences studies and graduate with degrees in engineering, science and technology.
MCCP is a rigorous academic support program that strives to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged community college students who transfer to four-year institutions and earn a degree in math-based, science-based, engineering or computer science fields.
The MESA Center is located in the Science and Engineering building room 46.

STEM
STEM students are those majoring in one of the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and are in calculus-based STEM classes.

Student Success Lab
The Student Success Lab provides students with assistance and NEW computer technology.

Tutoring Center
The Tutoring Center is a proven student success service that provides FREE tutoring to all currently enrolled Bakersfield College Students. Our one-on-one peer tutors are trained and certified students who can assist you with many Bakersfield College courses. Assistance with course content, required papers (at any stage) and/or academic skills are available through drop-in and scheduled appointments for most BC courses.

Workshops
Many department offer free workshops to students to assist you with your academic success. From help with registering for classes, Financial Aid applications, and transferring to 4-year colleges and universities to study skills, writing, and research techniques, there is a workshop to help you. Writing Center
Our Writing Center is open to assist students across campus with all types of writing projects at any stage of the writing process. Drop in and use our quiet study areas or reserve a group study room. Write papers in our computer lab or see one of our highly trained writing consultants. It's all free!
