  • Association of Independent California Colleges & Universities (Private Universities): The AD-T commitment is the Independent College and University sector’s adaptation of the AD-T pathway. All AICCUs institutions are not part of a system and each campus has its own admission and graduation requirements. If an AD-T student meets all requirements of admission to a participating institution, admission is guaranteed to that college or university as opposed to a CSU or UC system.
  • International Colleges and Universities: The Common App for transfer is an online application that makes it faster and easier for transfer students who are applying to International Colleges and Universities. Admission requirements vary by international campus. Make sure you meet with someone from the transfer team to look up the admission requirements for the international college & university that you might be interested in to transfer to continue the pathway to earn your degree.
  • Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU): is a program that is the development of transfer pathways that will facilitate a smooth transition for students from all California community college students to partnered HBCUs. California community college students who complete certain academic requirements are guaranteed transfer to a participating HBCU campus.
  • Online bachelor’s degrees: Transfer students taking courses online enables students to learn from almost anywhere and many students take advantage of this flexibility because it just works best. Some students could be working full-time, taking care of family, or prefer the distance learning format. Students who enroll into an online program and take courses can complete their degree on their own time.

General Education Patterns

Selecting a general education (GE) pattern is key in planning a timely transfer plan. There are 3 different education patterns you can pick from at Bakersfield College: IGETC, CSU Breadth, CalGETC, BC General Education. If you are unsure what pattern is best for you, meet with your pathway advisor or counselor to discuss your options.

  • California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CalGETC) - The California General Education Transfer Curriculum is the singular general education pathway for California Community College students to fulfill lower-division general education requirements necessary for transfer and admission to both the California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC).

  • Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum Pattern (IGETC) - The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a general education pattern that will fulfill all lower division general education requirements at all California State University (CSU) campuses and most University of California (UC) campuses/majors. It is also accepted by some private/independent or out-of-state universities. IGETC is usually recommended for students who intend to transfer to a UC campus, or who are not yet sure of their intended transfer university. Completion of the IGETC pattern is not an admission requirement for transfer to most UC or CSU campuses, nor is it the only way to fulfill the lower division GE requirements of a UC or CSU campus prior to transfer.

  • California State University General Education Breadth (CSU GE) - The California State University General Education-Breadth (CSU GE) pattern is one option that allows California community college transfer students to fulfill the lower-division general education requirements of any California State University (CSU) campus. The curriculum consists of a 39-unit pattern with five areas of concentration described in the CSU GE pattern. The CSU pattern requires students to complete courses or examinations that address the following:

    1. The historical development of American institutions and ideals (Area US-1), and

    2. The Constitution of the United States and the operation of representative democratic government under that Constitution (Area US-2)

    3. The process of California state and local government (Area US-3).

  • Students who wish to meet these requirements at Bakersfield College prior to transferring to a CSU campus may take up to six semester units from the combinations as followed: POLS B1 and one of the following: HIST B17A, B17B, B20A, B20B, B30A, B30B, B36 or HIST B17A and one of the following: POLS B1 or POLS B12.
