Engineering Program
The Engineering program provides the foundation for a career in various engineering fields. The program covers fundamental concepts in math, physics, and engineering, as well as hands-on experience with design, testing, and analysis of engineering systems.
Students will learn to use industry-standard software and tools to design and create solutions to engineering problems and will be prepared to transfer to a four-year university to continue their studies or to enter the workforce as engineering technicians. The program also includes general education courses to help students develop critical thinking and communication skills, making them well-rounded professionals.
What is Engineering?
Engineering is a field of study and practice that involves applying scientific, mathematical, and technical principles to design, develop, and improve systems, structures, machines, and processes. Engineers use their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems and create innovative solutions that can benefit society. Engineering encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and biomedical engineering, among others. Engineers often work in teams and collaborate with professionals from other fields to achieve their goals, and their work can have a significant impact on the world around us, from improving our infrastructure to developing new technologies that shape the way we live.
Is Engineering Right for Me?
An engineering degree can benefit a wide range of individuals who are interested in applying scientific and mathematical principles to design and develop new solutions to problems. Typically, those who enjoy problem-solving, critical thinking, and have a strong aptitude for math and science would be well-suited for an engineering degree. Engineers are often curious, analytical, and detail-oriented, with a passion for creating innovative solutions that can benefit society. If you are interested in designing, building, and improving systems, machines, structures, or processes, you may find an engineering degree to be a good fit for your interests and career goals. Additionally, those who enjoy working in teams and collaborating with professionals from other fields can benefit from the interdisciplinary nature of engineering.
There are several key traits and skills that can make you a good fit for studying engineering, including:
- Strong aptitude for math and science
- Analytical thinking
- Creativity
- Attention to detail
- Persistence
- Communication skills
- Technical skills
- Curiosity
This program is designed to meet the core transfer requirements for the bachelors degree programs in Marine Engineering Technology and Facilities Engineering Technology at California State University Maritime Academy (previously known as the California Maritime Academy).
