Staff Accessibility Resources

What does accessibility mean?

It means that we prepare digital information so that those with disabilities can use them. Studies show that when you make your content accessible, you make it more user friendly for everyone.

Making Content Accessible

There are many courses and tutorials to learn to make content accessible. We have some suggestions for where you can get started. We also offer some resources to help when you need a reminder.

Internal Training Resources

BC Workshops

Academic Technology offers online and in-person workshops on various topics for Bakersfield College Faculty and Staff. Some of the workshops are work-at-your-own-pace in Canvas. Watch your email for updates on workshops offered from Academic Technology.

Check Academic Technology Workshops periodically for:

  • Microsoft Word Accessibility
  • PowerPoint Accessibility
  • Canvas Accessibility
  • Captioning

Bakersfield College Non-Credit Courses

We offer two non-credit tuition-free courses for learning to create accessible content.

LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com)

These video-based tutorials are excellent work-at-your-own-pace training. They often include exercise files for hands-on training to making documents accessible. Earn certificates for completing courses.

Employees of Bakersfield College can access LinkedIn Learning at no cost. Connect your account using the instructions for LinkedIn Learning for Students.

Accessibility References

Make it Accessible for ALL

In addition to the training recommendations, we have created a few references for use by staff, faculty, students, and anyone who wishes to make their content more accessible.

External Document Services

We do not currently have an internal document remediation service. Making documents accessible for the web site and the classroom is the responsibility of the department/staff/faculty providing the document. For complex documents or when you have numerous documents to make accessible, it may be more efficient to outsource the remediation of your PDF documents. The CCCCO recommends the vendors below. Services are at the expense of your department.

Captioning

All media, including video and audio, must be captioned. Captions must be 99% accurate for the sounds and speech on all videos. Accuracy includes punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization.

Captioning Your Own Material

See Accessibility for Video and Audio Files for resources and training.
