What is Dual Enrollment?

High School districts offer college courses to their students during and after the high school day through Dual Enrollment (courses are now available for Spring 2024).

Here are some facts about Dual Enrollment at BC.

Most, if not all, students in the class are high school students.
Courses are primarily taught by high school instructors.
Students are approved and enrolled through their high school district.
All fees are waived and required materials are provided.

What is Concurrent Enrollment?

High school students can take courses at a Bakersfield College campus, or online, through Concurrent Enrollment (courses for Spring 2024 will be available beginning on October 2nd).

Here are some facts about Concurrent Enrollment at BC

Most of the students in the class will be traditional BC college students.
All courses are taught by college instructors.
Students are approved by their high school administrator or counselor.
Students must be cleared by Admissions & Records to register themselves in their courses.
Tuition cost is waived, but minimal fees apply and must be paid by the student.
Textbooks are not provided and must be purchased by the student, if required.

Do you have a DualEnroll.com account?

All high school students must request any college course they want to take through DualEnroll.com to receive consent from their parent/guardian and their high school administrator before they can register.

Yes: Awesome! You can log in through BC's DualEnroll portal and request your courses.
- If you are taking the course at your high school, check with your high school counselor to see which course you will be taking.
- If you are hoping to take a course online or on a college campus, you should schedule an appointment with a college Counselor to build an educational plan that meets your college and career goals. Email us at earlycollege@bakersfieldcollege.edu to schedule an appointment.

What happens after I request courses on DualEnroll.com?

I requested a dual enrollment course at my high school.

Parent: Provide Consent – Your parent/guardian will receive a text and/or email to provide their consent for you to take courses at the college. Watch our 'Parent FAQ's' video to assist your parent/guardian. This video is also available in Spanish.
College: Review Student – The Early College team will review your account and let you know if any additional steps are needed.
District: Verify Student Meets Prerequisites (if applicable) - Your high school district will upload transcripts for you. If you do not meet prerequisites, your request will be canceled.
College: Clear Prerequisites (if applicable) - A college counselor or advisor will review your transcript. If you do not meet prerequisites, your request will be canceled.
District: Assign Section – Your high school district will assign you to the correct section (CRN).
Complete: You will be registered in your dual enrollment course.
Need to drop a course?: If you need to cancel your course request or drop the course you are registered for, please contact us right away. If you do not drop by certain dates, you may receive a “W” or a failing grade on your transcript.

Confidentiality of Student Records

Student records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), state law, and Kern Community College District Board Policy from access by casual or unauthorized persons.

Access to records is provided to the student; appropriate college staff members, persons having written consent of the student, officials of the United States Department of Education, or by court order or subpoena.

The Privacy Act affords Bakersfield College the right to release such directory information as the student's name, address, e-mail address, photographs, telephone number, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended.

If a student does not want this information released, the student must check the privacy requested box on the admission/update forms.

Present and former Bakersfield College students are given the right to inspect, review, and challenge the contents of all educational records related to them. No information contained in their educational records may be released without their consent, except to those agencies or individuals authorized by the Act.

Students wishing to inspect, review, or challenge any of their educational records must make a request in writing to Enrollment Services by emailing BCadmission@kccd.edu. Copies of the Bakersfield College FERPA Policy are available in the Office of Admissions and Records.
