Recently, the Bakersfield College Renegade Motorsports team participated in the March Meets Drag Race held at Famoso Dragstrip just north of Bakersfield. The tradition-rich, three-day event brings together drag racing legends and devoted fans, and serves as a start to the 2025 NHRA Heritage Series Season. Twelve Bakersfield College Automotive students participated as crew members on the Top Fuel Dragster teams as part of a program sponsored by the Jim McLennen Foundation, Famoso Dragstrip, and NHRA. The program was started eight years ago when Bob McLennen wanted to honor his father by starting a program that introduced students to drag racing. He reached out to the BC Automotive Faculty and the team began participating soon after. The Renegade Motorsports team is excited to be a part of a program that gives students invaluable hands-on automotive experience.

In preparation for the competition season, the Renegade Motorsports team also worked together to build a fully functional racecar trainer, as well as two endurance racecars for competition on road courses across western states. One of the racecars was on display at the March Meet Drag Race, and several students were on hand to take donations and answer questions.

The Renegade Motorsports competition schedule continues in May when they compete at the Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, CA.
