This week, the Bakersfield College Student Government Association (BCSGA) hosted Campus Stories: Voices of Female Unconventional Leaders, an inspiring event held at the Renegade Event Center. As part of a series of events celebrating Women’s History Month, the discussion panel featured six BC faculty, staff, and students and was moderated by Olivia Garcia, Professor of History at BC.
More than a hundred attendees gathered to hear incredible stories of challenge, success, and triumph from the panelists. Throughout the event, the panelists shared their personal journeys, discussing the obstacles they faced and what it means to be an unconventional leader. In sharing their stories, they reminded attendees that strength and resilience come from within, encouraging them to embrace challenges for growth. Each speaker drew on their diverse backgrounds, sharing how their individual experiences have shaped them into the leaders they are today.
When asked what advice they would give to those aspiring to become unconventional leaders, the panelists emphasized the importance of building connections and networking. Anna Melby, one of the featured speakers, urged attendees to shift their mindset, viewing obstacles not as setbacks but as stepping stones to empowerment. “There is no such thing as the right time—go for it, and make the jump,” she encouraged, inspiring students to take bold steps toward their goals.
Following the discussion, the event concluded with time left for networking, delicious food, and refreshments. As Women’s History Month continues, Bakersfield College remains committed to celebrating the achievements of women and providing platforms for meaningful dialogue on gender equity and leadership.
