Last month, the Bakersfield College Rising Scholars Program partnered with the nonprofit organization Letters of Love to help make a difference through acts of service. Rising Scholars created and sent handmade cards to children battling serious illnesses as part of this inspiring initiative. Program Director Angelica Perez aimed to develop a project allowing the Rising Scholars to take the lead, gain hands-on experience, and explore volunteer opportunities.

“During our planning meetings, we brainstormed themes and project ideas, and after some deep dives on the internet, we came across Letters of Love,” said Angelica. “Since February is a month focused on love and kindness, we decided to create and send cards to children facing serious illnesses through this nonprofit organization.”

All students, faculty, staff, and community members were invited to participate. The Rising Scholars Program proudly facilitated the card-making process, providing all the necessary materials for participants. Through this experience, participants were able to engage in meaningful service, build empathy, and contribute to a cause greater than themselves. By bringing people together through acts of kindness, this initiative not only encouraged creativity but also strengthened the community spirit of connection and compassion.

The nonprofit organization Letters of Love distributed the cards to partnering hospitals and care facilities. Each letter was sent to children in need of encouragement and support on behalf of Bakersfield College and the larger BC community. Other Student Success programs were invited to participate in the month-long project, which expanded participation and generated an overwhelming wave of excitement and support.

“We were amazed by the response - cards came in from all over campus!” said Angelica. “This is the first time we’ve hosted an event like this, but based on the overwhelming participation and enthusiasm, we believe it will become an ongoing tradition.”
