The Bakersfield College Student Health and Wellness Center is hosting a healthcare discussion with Kern Family Health Care for BC students on October 24th, from 10:00AM to 12:00PM in Room 231 of the Campus Center Building. This unique event allows students to interact with Kern Family Health representatives and ask questions about medical and mental health. All BC students are welcome to attend, and the event is free of charge.
The state of mental health among college students remains a prevalent issue, as data continues to show an increase in the number of students suffering from anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. As college students attempt to navigate a unique moment in their lives, which often includes increased academic workloads, personal responsibilities, and jobs, it can be difficult to find a healthy mental and physical balance.
According to Inside Higher Ed, data from a recent Healthy Minds survey found that 44% of college students during the 2021-2022 academic year experienced symptoms of depression, while 37% said they experienced feelings of anxiety. Alarmingly, 15% of those surveyed said to have contemplated suicide—the highest rate in the survey’s 15-year history. Although the data is startling, there is still room for hope. The annual survey also showed that today’s students are more likely to seek help and counseling than ever before “Thirty-seven respondents said they had received mental health counseling in the past year, a 7% increase from 2020,” according to researcher Johanna Alonso.
Bakersfield College is proud to offer further support through the Student Health and Wellness Center. The center is committed to supporting enrolled students and providing them with the necessary resources to protect and improve both their mental and physical well-being. Without receiving adequate treatment, students may experience negative symptoms associated with poor physical or mental health. This could cause low self-esteem, diminished self-confidence, and low concentration and energy levels, which can adversely affect academic performance, and increase the likelihood of withdrawal from courses. From professional counseling services to thorough health screenings, the Student Health Center prioritizes the safety of all students, ensuring that each student has access to the support and resources necessary for pursuing higher education and reaching career goals at Bakersfield College.
We hope that you will be able to join us for this important discussion about medical and mental health. Our hope is that attendees will be encouraged in their academic journeys and gain a better understanding of healthcare services.
