Bakersfield College has partnered with the California Department of General Services (DGS) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1000 to upskill state custodial staff into office administrative roles. Through the combination of related and supplemental instruction and on-the-job training, apprentices will be prepared to successfully enter the roles of office technicians, personnel specialists, and staff services analysts.
On August 15, 2023, a signing ceremony was held to offer a congratulatory celebration
as students embark on their new journeys. The day was filled with inspiring words
from Joint Apprenticeship Committee members, state leaders, and a student who has
gone through a similar apprenticeship program, which has truly altered his life and
career trajectory. Students shared their motivations for beginning their program and
their ambition to continue pursuing higher education beyond the required courses.
The Custodial to Office Administration Apprenticeship has been developed by subject
matter experts to provide apprentices with the education, experience, and skills necessary
to be highly competitive candidates. While there is no cost to apprentices for tuition,
books, or instruction, those applying must be prepared to work hard and make personal
sacrifices. Apprentices are expected to attend classes during the week in the evenings
after work and continue coursework year-round.
