What is an EMT?
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a medical professional who is trained to provide basic emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients in a pre-hospital setting. EMTs are typically the first healthcare professionals to arrive at the scene of an emergency, such as a car accident or a heart attack, and are responsible for providing immediate care and transportation to a medical facility.
EMTs are trained to perform a variety of medical procedures and interventions, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bleeding control, splinting broken bones, administering oxygen, and providing basic medication. They also have knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and patient assessment skills.
There are three levels of EMT certification: EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic, each requiring progressively more training and clinical experience. EMTs work in a variety of settings, including ambulance services, fire departments, and hospitals, and are an essential part of the emergency medical system.
