Planetarium Field Trips + Astronomy-related Curriculum
Field trips to the Bakersfield College Planetarium during the fall and spring
semesters!
Teacher Resources prepared by Lisa Strobel
Shows using the new GOTO Chronos star projector and all-dome video system
are available during the college's fall and spring semesters. Each show
includes a tour of the evening sky pointing out the major constellations,
an all-dome
video
show, and question-answer time with our resident astronomer, Nick Strobel.
Reservation Process
- Read the school-groups "rules
and regulations" information. This includes payment
and refund
policies. No food or drink (except bottled water) allowed inside
the planetarium. If you agree, then continue...
- Check the Planetarium Fieldtrip Calendar
for an available slot. Planetarium shows are Tuesday and
Thursday mornings at 9:30 and 11 AM during the college's fall and spring
semesters
and the cost is a flat rate
of $120 for the entire group per one-hour show. Each show will be approximately
an hour
long
and
there
is
seating
for
a maximum
of 72 people per show.
- Choose your show. Details
about the shows are available on the Field
Trip Information page. Some of the shows come with educator
guides specific to the show.
- Make your reservation using the online
web form. Make sure you pick at least two options that are NOT
already taken by another school---check the fieldtrip
calendar before making
a reservation!
- Prepare your class for the fieldtrip by using the materials on the Teacher
Resources for Pre- and Post-Visit Learning.
- The Planetarium entrance will
be open for your group 5-10 minutes before your scheduled show. The Planetarium
is on the second floor, northwest corner of the Math-Science Building.
The standard Bakersfield College map does not show the planetarium, so
use this map
to the Planetarium. Buses usually park in the
SW parking lot off of University, west of the stadium.
