REGISTRATION PROCESS

The registration process has changed. Please read these instructions carefully!
Note the menu to the right ------------------------------------------------->>>
This menu floats as you scroll up and down the page.
'Go To Subjects' takes you to a list of all subject areas included in our Spring 2013 offering.
'View classes of interest' takes you to the list of all classes you or someone you are registering for will enroll in.
When you are finished selecting classes of interest, click the 'Proceed with registration' link from this floating menu.

As you select classes, this system generates a list of classes of interest. This list follows you as you navigate through the subsequent registration pages.
As the person registering, you will select classes on this page that you and/or anyone else you may be registering for will choose to enroll in. If you are only registering for other people, but you are doing the 'online' work, don't worry, this registration system can handle that option as well.

Courses

The Spring 2013 courses offered by the Institute are primarily designed to address the interests of those 55 and older, but they are open to all adults. They vary in length and subject and are outside the "credit" sphere of the college, and are not offered under the supervision of Bakersfield College instructional departments.

In addition to the courses offered through the Institute, you may wish to consider the hundreds of regular BC classes that can be taken for credit or, with instructor permission, audited. Some of these are short term, one unit classes. Consult the BC Spring 2013 Class Schedule.  You can view it on-line at www.bakersfieldcollege.edu

Course materials and assignments

A few courses will include required or suggested books and/or other materials, sometimes expected to be brought to the first class session. In addition, some instructors may have reading assignments for that session. Therefore, after you register, you should go to www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/levaninstitute and look up your course to see if there is such an assignment, or if materials/books are necessary.  You can purchase your books or materials at the BC Bookstore or from any other source you wish.

Fees

Although the Levan gift covers most of our startup and overhead expenses, we must charge fees in order to recover our direct instructional costs and any special materials or transportation costs associated with a course.

Refunds

Fees may be refunded until one week before the beginning of a course. Exceptions to this include courses for which transportation or other reservations, as well as materials purchases, must be made well in advance. An example of this is Classical Cuisine II.

Parking

Parking permits are required for parking on campus. You have two choices for purchasing permits.
  1. Purchase permits for $5.00 per day at one of the parking pass dispensers in the student/public parking lots. See the campus map for dispenser locations.
  2. Purchase a permit on-line for the whole term for a flat $10 fee. The Levan Institute office cannot assist you with this procedure since it is not responsible for issuing these permits. Parking permit fees are not refundable. The procedure for this follows:
  1. Log onto the website: www.thepermitstore.com to register for your parking permit.
  2. In response to "Enter your Parking Destination", type Bakersfield College and click the "Submit" button.
  3. Click the "Bakersfield College" button in the search results list.
  4. Click the "Apply" button in the list of options.
  5. Click on the "I Agree" box and type in your e-mail address and password (password must contain only letters and numbers with at least 7 characters minimum). Click the "Continue" button.
  6. Enter personal information requested. Under "Purchasing As", choose "Levan Institute Student".
  7. You will then see the following statement: "This institution offers preapproved permits.
    Please complete the following:"
For Student ID, enter 123456789. Fill in the other information requested. Then enter your last name in the next box and click the "Continue" button.
  8. Click on the "Buy" button next to the Levan Institute parking permit option.
  9. Enter all requested vehicle information; then click the "Add This Vehicle" button.
  10. Review your permit and vehicle information, select payment type from the drop down menu and then click the "Continue" button.
  11. Enter your payment information (credit card number, etc.) and then click the "Finish" button.
While your permit application is being approved, a temporary parking permit will be available for immediate parking privileges in the student lots. Please print the temporary permit and place it on the dash of your vehicle. Your regular parking permit will arrive via mail within 5-7 business days.

Memory Training Program
Seats available: 4 -- Requires online payment.

The goals of this UCLA developed Memory Training Program are to help you develop good memory habits and to teach you techniques to improve your memory. The course targets the four most common memory complaints that people experience in daily life: 1. Forgetting names and faces 2. Forgetting to do things in the future (like keeping an appointment, passing on a phone message, or forgetting why you walked into a room) 3. Forgetting where you put things (like your keys, glasses, or wallet) 4. Knowing something you cannot immediately recall - tip of the tongue challenges. The techniques in the course include strategies like organization, association and imagery to make information more memorable. Many research studies, including those conducted by Gary Small, M.D. and his colleagues at UCLA, have shown that these strategies are effective in improving memory in older adults with normal, age-related memory challenges. Also, the benefits of memory training can last well beyond the actual course---studies show that the benefits can last from six months to five years. In the Memory Training Program you will: 1. Learn techniques and strategies to improve memory 2. Learn to improve memory habits 3. Identify your learning style 4. Monitor memory with Memory Checks and Memory Awareness Questionnaires 5. Practice applying memory techniques to real life situations 6. Practice techniques learned with Skill Builders to do at home
