The Birds, written by Aristophanes, is a Greek comedy which can be considered bawdier than much of William Shakespeare’s work. At the time, women and children were prohibited from attending Greek comedic performances due to the perceived raciness of the content. The Birds will be performed by students in Bakersfield College’s Department of Performing Arts on April 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28. All shows start at 5 p.m. and the performances will be held in the lawn area between Memorial Stadium and the Bakersfield College Gymnasium. Paying tribute to ancient Greek Theatre, the performances will be outdoors at 5 p.m. and ending just as the sun is beginning to set. All performances begin at 5 p.m. and doors open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets for Bakersfield College’s performance of The Birds are $3.50 for students/staff/seniors/military and $5.50 for general admission, and will be available at the door. Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted.
